 I have always been fascinated with a bright smile. Everyone always wish to have white bright smile. A bright smile is perceived as a healthy smile. A brighter smile gives you confidence happiness and Radiant health.

Tooth whitening is one of the most economical ways to enhance your smile.

No matters how hard you clean your teeth, teeth get darkened by extrinsic stains like tea coffee, the tooth may itself get discolor.


Food causing stains-

  1. Liquid like coffee, tea, cola, sports drinks and red wine can discolor teeth
  2. Betel chewing
  3. Overuse of chlorhexidine mouthwash
  4. Smoking stains






Methods of tooth whitening:

In office-

Tooth whitening up to 7 shades can be done using this method and can last for a year depending upon the lifestyle of the individual. Intake of coffee, colored food products can compromise the effectiveness of the treatment.

 10 to 44% carbamide peroxide with gum protection is generally used.

If heavy Stains like tetracycline or fluorosis, bleaching is ineffective.

Laser bleaching-

It’s actually light accelerated bleaching, with the common being halogen, LED, or plasma arc.

Use of light during bleaching is found to increase in tooth sensitivity. A 10- 15 minutes of blue light exposure initiates the hydrogen peroxide reaction with the concentration of 25- 35 percent hydrogen peroxide in the whitening gel.

Teeth are then polished using pumice and bleaching agent with lots of water.

Try to avoid eating or drinking colored food, red wine, smoking right after the treatment.



Internal bleaching on a non vital tooth-

Internal stains of a tooth can be discolored from Inside Out have undergone root canal treatment (RCT). It includes cleaning the canal and placing peroxides gel into the pulp but there is a small risk of external resorption.



At home-

You can use whitening strips, paint on films or whitening toothpaste. The key ingredient is either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.


Night guard bleaching-

This is a most convenient method and results are achieved at your home. You are given a tray and bleaching solution by your dentist. It is a safe, effective, predictable, best way to whiten your teeth that last for more than 2 years.


Whitening toothpaste-

Look for carbamide peroxide, hydrogen peroxide or any other bleaching agent into the toothpaste before buying it. Most of the whitening toothpaste contains abrasive which are harmful for your tooth surface so try avoiding toothpaste with abrasives like alumina, di calcium phosphate dehydrate, calcium carbonate or silica.


OTC (over the counter) whitening strips and gels-

Teeth are whitened by 1 to 2 shades but you need not to go to any dentist, you can buy it online and do it by yourself at home. click here, to check out.






The most common side effect of tooth bleaching is increase sensitivity teeth and irritation of gums if gums are not protected properly but they tend to resolve once bleaching is done.

Teeth whitening are minimal invasive economical dental procedure. Teeth whitening only work on natural teeth and you can keep your teeth stain free by taking good care of your teeth. Brush daily before going to bed and after get up from bed really helps a lot, so make it a part of your daily schedule. Don’t forget, smoking stains your teeth and is not good for health.
